: Hotel Catalina is well situated for a stay in Avalon. It's close to everything. The hotel itself is an older hotel that has some pleasant outdoor areas for guests. It seems fairly secure. The front desk personnel were great - friendly, professional, and helpful. Their expertise came in handy when my payment to Booking.com for the stay had not yet been paid to the hotel by the time I arrived. The bed was quite comfortable and there was a working little fridge in the room, though no coffee maker, no microwave, no cups, not much in the way of amenities.
: The hotel's age means that extra attention needs to be given to the facility in order to keep it up to par. Things like a curved sink set into a squared-off corner, leaving a rusty frame behind it, paint peeling, paint blobs on windows and trim not cleaned off, a faulty remote control for the main fan/light unit that would randomly turn on or off (having the light come on while you're trying to sleep is not okay), the toilet seat seemed ancient and battered, like it was one of the originals for the hotel - those are examples of things that should be addressed. The fact that windows don't close and lock means guests have to wonder about security. It seems that the OMEO (?) folks think that if they throw some towels in with their logo, that's all they need to do to have a great branded property. That's not true.The other things guests should be aware of are that there's no staff on the premises in the evenings and mornings. There's no housekeeping during your stay (or at least, not during ours). Coffee arrives at 8 a.m., long after many guests are up and about. The pastries from the local bakery that are advertised on Booking.com do not exist. Instead, there are mini-granola bars and that's it.
